What to Expect
The Fairfax Volunteer Fire Department works side-by-side with career firefighters to serve the community. Volunteers receive professional training and play an essential role in emergency response, training, and department activities.
🚒 Two Fire Stations & One Training Center
Volunteers serve at Station 3 in downtown Fairfax, Station 33 on Fairfax Blvd, and our dedicated training center on Picket Rd.
👨🚒 80+ Volunteer Members
Our volunteers work alongside 50 career personnel to support the department.
⏱ Monthly Riding Commitment
Members typically complete at least 20 riding hours per month.
🎓 Professional Training
Volunteers are trained as Emergency Medical Technicians and Firefighters.
📅 Monthly Membership Meetings
Held the second Monday of each month at Station 3.
🤝 Active Department Community
Members participate in training, events, and department activities.
HOW TO JOIN
The path to service
- Questionnaire
- Fill out our initial questionnaire.
- Information Session
- Meet with the membership committee.
- Application
- Fill out an application after meeting with the committee.
- Interview
- Complete background investigation forms.
- Recognized Member
- Introduced at a monthly membership meeting.
- Probationary Member
- Complete orientation training.
- Full Member
- After training and participation.
- Ongoing Participation
- Minimum Staffing
- Continuing Education: 40 hours of training per year required
Training Path
Certifications and requirements
- Orientation (“Red Hat Training”)
- Intro to equipment, EMS basics, safety
- Red Hat Riding
- Ride apparatus while gaining experience
- Certification Training
- EMT (3 months)
- Firefighter I & II (5 months)
